Tips to protect your packages from porch pirates

Updated: Dec 14, 2020

Tis the season to steal packages, so say the porch pirates. If you saw our last blog, you would know this holiday season may be the busiest shipping seasons ever as shoppers are shopping from home over fears of the #Covid19 pandemic. And more packages shipping means more opportunities for theft. Here are some tips to help keep your packages safe this holiday season.

Post Office

You can actually ask the post office to hold the packages instead. Opt for the ”Hold for Pickup” option. You can collect the item from your local post office. If it is already on the way, you can intercept the package with a special feature using the Track & Manage tab and click the “Intercept a Package” feature.

Choose your Delivery Time

Schedule your deliveries when you are at home. The Tracking tab will allow you to direct packages for pickup and times when it can be delivered if you choose. The service is free of charge, so it won’t be a hassle for you.

Decorate Your Porch

Package thieves tend to steal items when it is out in the open. You can add some decors to obscure the packages from their sight. Add some plants or pieces of furniture. Having these items surround the package makes it a hassle to steal it from your porch, helping cut down theft.

You can send a request to your courier for specific instructions so that the item cannot be seen so easily.

Security Cameras and Doorbells

Having a solid security system would not fully prevent package theft. However, it helps to retrieve packages as you can easily send footage to the police or upload them online. Also, thieves will most likely avoid porches with security systems.

Package Delivered to Your Workplace

To keep the Christmas gift a secret, you can change your shipping address. Since most packages are delivered 9-5, and you’re not home at that time, it makes sense to change your shipping address to your workplace. If your company has a mailroom, then you can have packages delivered to your office.

However, if you decide to do this, make sure that you’ve asked permission from your boss or human resources to have the holiday gifts delivered to the office mailroom.

Allow Access to Your Home

There are delivery services such as Amazon Key and Walmart Home delivery that give alerts so they can leave the package inside of your home. You will need a smart lock for this option. The courier will give a brief alert that will then give them temporary access to your home.

When you do this, make sure that you do not leave your valuables all over the place. If you have pets, you will need to find ways to make sure they cannot escape.

“Ship to Store”

The “ship to store” option allows shoppers to pick up their packages from stores. Most retailers offer this service for free.

At the check-out, look for the in-store pickup shipping option. Select the store nearest to you. The retailer will ship the item to the store, where it will wait until you confirm for pickup.

Alexa is a great item to have. However, Christmas gifts are best kept as secrets for the suspense. Keep #Alexa from announcing your Christmas purchases while preventing package theft with these simple steps.

Happy Shopping.
